Copper’s front-month future closed Friday at $6.56 per pound. That is 1.2% lower on the week but 2% higher on the month. The metal is up 16.6% this year and 32.4% from a year ago.
It has eased from its peak. Our data show a record close of $6.80 on 9 September 2026, so copper is now 3.5% below it. The 52-week range is $4.90 to $6.83.
What the market was reacting to
Mining.com reported on Thursday that copper fell for a third straight day as a US inflation shock and easing risk of a strike in Chile prompted selling. A trader quoted by Mining.com described profit-taking after two factors hit the market at the same time.
Copper is used in building, power grids and vehicles, and is often watched as an indicator of economic activity. A rise in expected interest rates tends to weigh on it, while supply problems in producing countries can lift it. This week showed both effects.
