What moves the platinum price?
- Autocatalyst demand. Emission-control systems in cars are the largest single use, so vehicle production trends matter.
- Supply concentration. Most mine output comes from a small number of regions, making the market sensitive to local disruption.
- Substitution with palladium. Automakers can shift between platinum and palladium in some applications, linking the two prices.
- Investment demand. Bars, coins and exchange-traded products add a speculative layer on top of industrial use.
Frequently asked questions
Why is platinum often priced differently from gold?
Gold is mainly a monetary and investment asset, while platinum depends heavily on industrial demand, so the two can diverge for long periods.
