Which releases usually matter most for gold and oil
| Event | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Fed rate decision (FOMC) | Interest rates and guidance drive the dollar and real yields, the main influences on gold. |
| US CPI / PCE inflation | Hotter inflation lifts rate expectations and can pressure gold in the short run; also feeds oil’s inflation narrative. |
| US Non-Farm Payrolls | Jobs data moves rate expectations, the dollar and gold within minutes. |
| EIA weekly petroleum report | Crude and fuel inventories, production and refinery runs move WTI and Brent. |
| OPEC+ meetings | Production targets are among the biggest drivers of oil supply expectations. |
| ECB, BoE, BoJ decisions | Shift currencies against the dollar, which changes gold and oil in other currencies. |
| China PMI and trade data | China is the largest buyer of crude and a major buyer of gold and copper. |
| CFTC Commitments of Traders | Shows how speculators are positioned in gold, silver and oil futures. |

How to use an economic calendar
Markets move on the difference between a release and what was expected. A number that matches the forecast often changes little; a large surprise can move prices sharply. The calendar lists the forecast and previous value so you can judge how large a surprise would be.
Prices can be volatile and spreads wider around major releases, particularly the Fed decision, US CPI and payrolls. Check the live gold price, oil prices and the markets and ratios page alongside the calendar, and read the guide to what moves gold.
