Methodology
How we obtain, calculate and display prices, and where the numbers can differ from other sources.
Price sources
- Gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper, Bitcoin: live spot quotes from the public gold-api.com feed, refreshed about every 30 seconds.
- WTI, Brent, natural gas: front-month futures quotes from Yahoo Finance’s public chart data, refreshed about every 90 seconds.
- Historical data: daily open, high, low and close of front-month futures (Bitcoin: spot) from Yahoo Finance, stored in our database and refreshed several times a day. Futures series are continuous front-month contracts, so they can differ slightly from spot prices and from other providers.
- Exchange rates: daily rates by ExchangeRate-API, updated about once a day.
- News: public RSS feeds from Mining.com, OilPrice.com, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the Federal Reserve, Investing.com, CNBC and MarketWatch. We show the headline and a short excerpt supplied by the publisher, with a link to the original.
Daily change
The daily change for each market is calculated as the current price versus the previous trading session’s close of the matching front-month future. For metals, the percentage is taken from the futures contract and applied to the spot price. This is why gold shows a change at the weekend: it is the move of the last session, not zero.
Market hours and status
Metals and oil futures trade nearly 24 hours on weekdays and pause from about 22:00 UTC on Friday to about 22:00 UTC on Sunday. During that time we label prices “Market closed”. Bitcoin trades continuously. A price is labelled “Delayed” if our feed has not updated for more than about 20 minutes during open hours.
Unit conversions
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams
- 1 tola = 11.6638038 grams
- 1 barrel of oil = 158.987 liters = 42 US gallons
- Karat purity: 24K 99.9%, 22K 91.67%, 21K 87.5%, 18K 75%, 14K 58.5%, 10K 41.7%
Gold price in other currencies
We multiply the XAU/USD spot price by the USD exchange rate for the currency and divide by the weight of the unit. The results show the value of the gold content only. They do not include dealer margins, making charges, taxes or import duties, so local retail prices are higher.
How we write analysis
The articles under Analysis are prepared by GoldOilPrice Research with AI assistance. Each uses figures from our own price database (closes, weekly and yearly changes, ranges and ratios) and facts from the public sources linked at the bottom of the piece. We do not copy source text, we state which statements come from which publisher, and we label opinions as the opinions of their authors. We do not give forecasts or investment advice. If you find an error, tell us and we will correct it and mark the update date.
Limitations
Prices are indicative, can be delayed and may contain errors or interruptions. They are not suitable for trading decisions. If a source is unavailable we show the last known value with its time rather than an invented one.
