Gold and oil trading hours

Gold, silver and crude oil futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday 6:00 pm to Friday 5:00 pm New York time, with a one hour break every day from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. That is 23 hours a day on weekdays. Spot gold and most CFD brokers follow almost the same schedule, but each broker publishes its own hours.

On exchange holidays, such as Christmas Day, New Year's Day and some US public holidays, hours are shortened or the market is closed. Check the exchange or broker calendar. When the market is closed our prices show the last session and the change against the previous close.

The best time to trade gold and oil

Activity is highest when the London and New York sessions overlap, roughly 8:00 am to 12:00 pm New York time. Gold also reacts strongly to US economic releases, usually at 8:30 am New York time, and crude oil reacts to the weekly US inventory report on Wednesdays. Check the economic calendar for exact times.

Liquidity is thinner in the Asian session and around the daily break, so spreads can widen and prices can jump on small orders.
