What the gold to oil ratio shows
The ratio divides the gold price per ounce by the price of a barrel of WTI crude. A reading of 25 means one ounce of gold buys 25 barrels.
It rises when gold gains on oil or oil falls, and falls when oil rallies faster than gold. Because oil moves with supply shocks and demand cycles while gold reacts to rates and risk, the ratio can swing widely.
Analysts sometimes use it to compare gold’s purchasing power over time. It is descriptive context and not a trading signal.
